Milk Based Homemade Soap

Posted by David DeLauro on Thursday, April 12. 2012 at 23:49 in Soap, Video

This video is an updated version of a previous video that had audio problems. This is a quick video to show the process I went through to create a very nice soap with lavender flowers embedded in it. The soap is made with milk (heavy whipping cream) and then palm oil, coconut oil, soybean oil and cocoa butter. I added Vitamin E, Peach coloring and Lotus Blossom fragrance after the soap reached trace. Enjoy!

This is so neat. Do you sell your soap? I love diy projects and your video is easy to follow. I've seen a few soap making videos online and am buying/gathering supplies to try it at home. But how long does the soap last if there are milk products in it? What keeps it from going rancid?

There are a few ways of keeping the soap from going rancid. The easiest is keeping it in the fridge after curing. The soap gets up to about 300 degrees when it is saponifying so you don't need to worry about the soap going "bad" as all the bugs are cooked out.

how much milk did you use?

I used 8oz of milk. If you go to 3:10 in the video you can see me describe the process.

Enjoyed your video. I am new to soap making - having a whole TWO batches under my belt! Both are curing, and seem to have gone well. I'm getting ready to try a buttermilk soap. The book I'm reading said to mix the lye with frozen milk... hmmm. By adding the lye to the water first, as you did, are you actually decreasing the amount of milk you use? What is the best way to proceed?
